Barbara & Bob |
24th January 2014
I can't believe I have taken so long to put this one up! It's only a short one, and needs to go up before I do the Easter blog, or I'll never hear the end of it ;-)
We were only heading off for a couple of nights as that was all our company could spare. Barbara was having a play-date with Bob!!! And this was his very first camping trip away from civilisation ☺ So we couldn't go very far, and we needed a tamer place than we would normally attempt, so we settled for Cheynes Bridge about 20 minutes this side of Licola. It's close to the road, has a loo, a good grassy area to camp on, and the beautiful Macalister River running by.
We left home around 12.30 on the Friday afternoon with Jenny & Greg, and of course Bob! It was quite warm, but teeming with rain, big heavy drops that came straight down, hit the ground and bounced straight back up again! Hope it gets better than this :-O

We stopped at Rosedale for some coffee and pies for lunch, and the rain was still pouring down. I didn't bring an umbrella and my $2 rain poncho was packed away in Barbara. Rosedale was mobbed with holiday makers on their way to celebrate Australia Day at the Gippsland Lakes. GM stayed in the car and I got absolutely soaked through. Luckily my case was in the back of the car, so once we got back on the road and off the main drag, I changed into dry clothes.....a very difficult task when someone who is supposed to be driving is trying to make it as difficult as possible!! I swear that man has an extra 4 pairs of hands he saves for occasions such as this! I had clothes and undies hanging all through the car to try and dry off. ☺
By the time we got to Cheyne's Bridge the rain had eased off and was down to a light drizzle. I found my poncho and we had Barbara set up in no time at all, a camp fire on the way and a glass of bubbles in my hand. This is what it's all about!! ☺
There were a few people there and a breeze had picked up, which dropped the temperature quite significantly. We had some bloke from the next campsite come over and have a few drinks with us, I think his name was Alan, but can't be too sure coz my brain was a wee bit fuzzy from too much champers. I do remember that he didn't seem to want to leave tho....must have been having a good time! I think he got sent away while we were having dinner. We had a BBQ, I do remember that much! I had made up some salads to bring with us, and they went down a treat!

After a lazy breakfast, we piled into Gregs car and set off for a trip to Licola and some firewood to collect along the way. It was a lovely day, not too hot and a cool breeze to keep the conditions a bit more bearable.
Licola has a shop, a park and a caravan park. Not much else! They only sold instant coffee.....bad business, if they were smart, they'd have a coffee machine and cakes or scones and pies and things.....there are a lot of tourists at this time of the year, and it's a lovely place to stop and have a break on the way up to the high country.
I took lots of pics of the bridge and the river, GM and I had an ice cream, we all piled into the car and took off to find some firewood.
We found some old fence posts dumped on a grassy bank, perfect for what we wanted, so while the boys loaded these into the back of the ute, I took some more pics of rusty wire and fence posts. ☺
Back to camp and it was time for some nibbles and refreshments. Jenny had the first and only injury from this trip......maybe I should bring her along more often.......I'm the injury/animal prone one normally !!
The rest of the day was spent lazing around the place and enjoying the clean air of the countryside.

HAPPY AUSTRALIA DAY........AUSSIE AUSSIE AUSSIE OI OI OI!!!!!!!!!!!
I went for a wander with the camera while the others piled into the beast and went for a bit of a 4WD adventure before packing up camp.
Everyone seemed thoroughly relaxed, and Jenny seems to have really enjoyed the camping experience. Something she was concerned she may not like too much. It was just like playing house, and she's had great fun setting up her camper with all the knick-knacks and things.
Thank goodness it wasn't stinking hot weather. This time last year all of these hills were on fire, and we wouldn't have come anywhere near here if the conditions had been similar. As it was, there were fires around Licola a few days after this. The bush in summer can be quite terrifying, but this weekend was perfect!!!
We packed up camp and headed off around midday. Home safe and sound mid afternoon with not too much mess or washing to do. All in all, a very pleasant weekend!! ☺
