BARBARA'S KIMBERLEY ADVENTURE - EXMOUTH

We arrived in Exmouth and went straight to the visitors centre and booked a snorkelling tour for the next morning. We went and booked into the caravan park across the road....a good thing too as camp sites were as rare as hens teeth!!!! The place was just bursting at the seams......our neighbours from Karratha , Grant & Meredith (from Sale), ended up getting a spot in an overflow bay.......it was a nice caravan park right near the town centre and full of lovely friendly people :-) the weather was just glorious...around 30......so we went for a drive and checked out the sights, then back to camp for drinks and more blog time :-)

We had stopped at a place called Pebble Beach.  Unfortunately I didn't take the camera, but the rocks looked like they were made of different coloured candy.  The beach was covered in the candy coloured pebbles and they were so smooth and round....like Clinkers, but without the chocolate coating....I wanted to bring them home, but didn't have room :-(

We met Ray & Robyn from Bunbury......they were in the van next to us and came and had a few wines.....Robyn gave me a new wine glass coz mine was looking a wee bit seedy and worn out by this time.....what a sweetie she was.....quite a character too and gave me a huge hug when we left the next morning :-D

We grabbed a cuppa and then went to the visitors centre to wait for our tour. It was with "Ningaloo Ecology Cruises - Alek & Gina's Glass Bottom Boat". What a grand adventure we had :-)

Mark was our tour guide for the land part of the tour and he took us to see the Mildura Wreck that went down off the tip of Exmouth in 1907....there was no loss of lives but 481 cows drowned :-( he talked about the American influence in the area......it wouldn't be there but for the American Navy, and the infrastructure and services are excellent and obviously provided for by the yanks :-).

The American houses are built in concrete (including the roof tops) and the Aussie ones are fibro and tin :-)
They have their massive low frequency towers there that allow them to have radio contact with their submarines.

There used to be a windfarm at Exmouth, but with the solar panels and the amount of electricity that was going back into the grid, it wasn't profitable for the power company anymore, so they banned any future solar electricity and pulled down the wind farm.....what a joke!!!!!!!!!!!

Then we were at the glass bottom boat.....time for the good stuff!!!! We met Alek.......what a character!!!! He gave us the safety briefing and had us all in hysterics :-)

We floated over the reef and learnt all about the different reef creatures and corals......it was pure magic to the senses......then it was time to go in......I had never done snorkelling, so was a wee bit anxious. I went into panic for a while and decided there was no way I could stick my head under there!!!!! But after floating around for a while and relaxing, I took to it like a fish to water ;-). This is the life!!!!!!! Pure bliss!!!!!! The water was just beautiful and the sights were spectacular :-). I only swallowed around 1/2 the Indian Ocean......but so did everyone else!!!! I need to do this more often......lots more often!!!!!!

GM, the rest of the passengers and I after a snorkel :-)

C'mon in, the waters perfect!!!!! :-)

We finished our tour with the "Turtle Centre" and the lighthouse, from where we could see lots of humpback whales frolicking along the coastline. I would recommend this tour for anyone who goes to Exmouth....it is so informative and so much fun and the tour guides are awesome :-)

The Lighthouse

The gun tower, which has been destroyed twice by cyclones.

Exmouth is full of people from Perth who spend 3 to 4 months here every year, can't say I blame them.....wonderful place :-)

We left sleepy, laid back Exmouth with heavy hearts, knowing we were now heading south and into the colder climes and people who are always in a rush. In a way, it almost felt the holiday was over.....gosh I love the sunshine.....maybe I should become a gipsy and just follow it!!!!!

One day maybe ;-)
