We arrived at Karratha around 10.30 in the morning and checked into the Pilbara Holiday Park Caravan park. It was a really well set up park. I did a bit of well needed washing and then we toodled off to see the sights. GM was in his element showing me around his old stomping grounds :)
We drove to Dampier where I had a cuddle with Red Dog :-)
They should more their signs.....ruins a good pic ;-) |
then off to the Mermaid Hotel for a beer and a steak sanga. They have what you call "skimpies" serving there (would have been topless waitresses not that long ago). I was horrified at first thinking I was in the
wrong bar and certainly didn't want someone else's tits hanging in my beer!!!! GM was in hysterics at the look on my face...probably took me there on purpose the cheeky bugger!!!
We went for a look around the place,

the industry and GM's old Dongas and then off we went to the Karratha gas plant. GM explained how it all worked and then we went into the visitor centre and watched a video on the history and operation of the plant.....was just like sitting an induction at work when they went into the environmental stuff so I cleared out of there fast before they gave us a test ;-)
We went and did a wee bit of shopping to stock up our dwindling supplies and then out for dinner at the Tambrey Tavern......my friend Teresa worked there when it very first opened!!!......where we met up with a few of GM's old work buddies. What a funny night that was, and what a great bunch :-). It was lovely to finally meet some of the names that are so familiar :)
Being the responsible one in this relationship, I stuck to non-alcoholic stuff so that GM could have a bit of fun.....he owes me one for sure now!!!! ;-)
The next day was spent catching up with the blog and general maintenance and in the afternoon we we went for a drive around Karratha and checked out GM's old Donga and all the industry there,
then into the Karratha international for a couple of glasses of bubbles....that was nice :-)
Cheers!!! :-) |
We had an early night and were packed up and out at around 9. We gave Barbara a lovely wash and toodled back into town where we pottered around for a little while and then met up with my mate Woof at macca's. I live in the same town but only get to see him when I'm a million miles away :-)
We left Karratha at midday and drove for a few hours and stopped to take a pic of Woofs
Donga at the Fortescue Road House on the way.

Woof's Donga maybe?? :-) |
We needed to find a place for the night so we pulled off at a little road and followed it for a little way and found the most amazing campsite that allowed me to finally see a truly beautiful side to the Pilbara :-)
We packed early the next morning and our destination was Exmouth.....
We were still having fun ;-)
